Gov't to halt export of health workers to Trinidad

Government is to halt the exportation of health workers to Trinidad and Tobago, health minister Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye has said.

Government has halted the exportation of health workers to Trinidad and Tobago. Health minister Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye learnt that, over 60 percent of the shortlisted health workers were working in government health facilities.


Speaking during the commissioning of a new Children's theatre at China Uganda Friendship hospital Naguru on Saturday, Tumwesigye said about 160 vacancies of specialists in different fields in the country are not filled.

"We cannot allow the exportation of health workers in the current form; it is not a good practice. We are discussing with the ministry of labour to review this and also look at the mode of employment and find a possibility of getting retired health workers or those who are not yet employed,” the minister said.

He said government is to create the working condition for health workers to ensure that they stay at their work stations.   
Recently the MPs directed the ministers of health and foreign affairs to halt a plan to export over 1000 health workers to Trinidad and Tobago, pending an assessment of the total workforce in the country.

Among those required are 15 physicians, 20 psychologists, 20 radiologists, 15 paediatrics, 9 Ear Nose and Throat specialists, 4 anaethiastics, Ophthalmologists, 4 pathologists, 15 surgeons, eurologiststs, 15 orthopaedics, 15 gynaecologistst, 20 nursing officers and 100 registered midwives.
