President Yoweri Museveni and the Aga Khan affiliated group of investors met and reviewed development strategies in the country.

Meeting the president at State House Entebbe midweek, the group of investors expressed interest in undertaking further electricity generation programmes in Uganda.

The Aga Khan-related companies were part of the development partners that participated in the building of the 250megawatt Bujagali Power Dam.

The dam which cost US$900 million and was commissioned in October 2012 as Uganda celebrated 50 years of independence was jointly funded by the Government of Uganda, the Industrial Promotion Service (IPS) which is the infrastructure and development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.

Other development partners in the building of the hydro-power dam included Sithe Global Power of USA.

In August 2012, Bujagali Energy Ltd placed into service the largest power generating plant in Uganda of 250MW that helped to increase the installed capacity of electricity generation of 44%.

This has nearly doubled the country’s effective peak electricity generation capacity.

Bujagali hydro-power plant has also gone a long way in serving as a catalyst to Uganda’s economic growth by eliminating load-shedding as well as replacing the expensive thermal power production thereby lowering the cost of electricity.

The delegation commended the good partnership and co-operation with the government of Uganda.
