Fort Portal-Bundibugyo - Lamia road almost complete

Over 85% of the works on the Fort Portal-Bundibugyo-Lamia road, which started in 2010, are finished. The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) says the road is scheduled for completion at the end of this year. The road was supposed to have been completed last year but was delayed by a number of challenges.

“This is a project with a challenging terrain. It is true the contractor was supposed to complete the works at the end of last year but has faced a challenging terrain, increased scope of work to dig more into the hills, delayed compensation of affected property owners and changes in design to make the road safer,” Dan Alinange, UNRA’s head of corporate communications said.

The sh170b project, which is jointly financed by the African Development Bank (82.6%) and by the Government, is being eagerly awaited by farmers in the region as it will make transportation of their produce to the markets easier.

The road is divided into the following sections: Section one (Fort Portal-Itojo, 34.7km), Section two (Itojo-Sempaya, 24.5km) and Section three (Sempaya-Lamia, 44.4km). The total project road length is about 103.6km.

Section one and three works involve widening of the existing narrow road, scarify the gravel surfacing and reprocessing it into 250mm improved sub-grade.

Section two, the new realignment involves earth works and boosts of an improved sub-grade.
