Despite a lackluster first round of defeats, determination and self-belief by players saw Hima Cement Heathens spring back on course in the second round and eventually winning the 2014/15 Nile Special Rugby League.

Team captain Michael Wokorach said his side were inspired by “self-belief” that kept them “chasing even when we were trailing behind our opponents”.

That, he said in his speech moments before being crowned winners, helped them win all their second round games.

The impressive Heathens were crowned champions by Nile Breweries marketing director Daniel Ogong at Kyadondo Rugby Club on Saturday.

Earlier, they had to shake off Buffaloes in a 15-12 victory to wrap up a very successful season.

By the break, they were trailing 10-12 but fought back thanks to Edrine Kayima who scored a try in the second half that gave Heathens the edge over their resilient opponents.

The eventual champions took an early 3-0 lead through a penalty by Chris Lubanga but Buffaloes swiftly replied via two tries by Puis Ogena and a conversion by Solomon Okias which put them ahead by half time.

But it was it did not all end without drama.

The referees clashed with Uganda Rugby Union (URU) boss Andrew Owor, demanding for their pay.

"You pay us. Why don't you want to pay us?” erupted referee boss Dennis Odongkara towards URU’s Owor.

The fiery verbal exchange went on before the referees finally vowing not to officiate any other match until they are paid.
