Attorney General Peter Nyombi is in India for a scheduled medical review, Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has explained.

Rugunda told the New Vision that the Nakasongola MP was granted permission to travel to India for medical review.

"It is not true at all that the Attorney General traveled to India because he was poisoned.  Our colleague went to India last year for treatment and he has gone back for review. That is why he is not around," Rugunda explained.

Asked about the health details, Rugunda declined to comment saying, "You shouldn't even be getting near that question. The minister is ok but let us not discuss his illness in public."

Dr. Rugunda was responding to a story published by a local tabloid that Nyombi had been rushed to India in a critical condition after suspected poisoning.

Nyombi's absence from the NRM retreat at Kyankwanzi reportedly sent tongues wagging that he had dodged the meeting.

Dr. Rugunda explained that Nyombi could not attend since the meeting coincided with his medical review appointment.

Asked about his predecessor Amama Mbabazi's failure to attend the Kyankwanzi caucus retreat, Rugunda declined to comment referring the question to the Chief Whip Kasule Lumumba.

Mbabazi the party's former secretary general had not stepped at the retreat venue citing busy schedule.

Members were however still optimistic that he will come.
