The Minister of Education in the Buganda government Dr. Twaha Kaawaase has revealed that the Kingdom has embarked on a move to set up vocational institutions to promote technical education around the region.

This was during the 9th graduation ceremony at Buganda Royal Institute of Business and technical education (BRIBTE) at the main campus in Kakeeka Mengo where 933 graduates were awarded with Diplomas and Certificates in various disciplines over the weekend.

The Minister explained that the master plan is to have vocational institutions in all the 18 counties of the kingdom but they are to start with five counties that have so far identified premises for construction.

“We shall first deal with Mawogola, Kyaggwe, Butambala, Kyaddondo and Bulemeezi because they have already identified premises for construction but other county chiefs should also start looking for locations,” Kaawaase said.

Kaawaase called upon parents with students joining senior one and five to apply for the more than 1000 bursaries in various secondary schools that are provided by the kingdom through the Kabaka Education Fund (KEF).

He said, “We thank the Kabaka for having envisaged the KEF project which I believe many of the graduates today are also beneficiaries and I encourage parents to also apply for the secondary school bursaries for senior one and five but the Alumina of the project should also contribute to KEF to give others a hand.”

The kingdom prime minister, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga emphasized that, “the Kingdom is at the moment more concerned with the promotion of technical education in the struggle to curb down on the rate of unemployed youths around Buganda.

He observed that if the graduates apply the acquired technical skills to create jobs through innovation and working diligently, they will take back Buganda to the Pinnacle.

“Innovation and creation is one of the pillars we are looking at to revive our lost summit but if you graduates top up that with diligence and integrity, we shall rejuvenate Buganda’s glory,” said Mayiga.

The principle Buganda Royal Institute, Anthony Wamala cautioned graduates against greed and laziness in the work force and called upon parents to continue guiding and parenting their children even if they have graduated.

Of the 933 graduates, 464 were female while 469 were male. A new lecture block was commissioned by the Katikiro at the ceremony.
