A police commander in Mukono district has died after he was hit by a speeding motor vehicle under unclear circumstances.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Raymond Atooli, who was the field force unit commander for Mukono district police, died on Sunday.

According to close friends, Atooli was in perfect health before he met his death. “I was shocked to hear of his death. I had fond memories of an energetic, charismatic, brave, bright and social officer,” said Henry Kalulu, a fellow police officer and friend.

Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the news of Atooli’s death but said he did not have details at hand, and referred New Vision to the Mukono district Police Commander, Alfred Bangambaki.

When contacted, Bangambaki said Atooli was knocked in the middle of Mukono town as he walked by the roadside.

“It was at first a hit-and-run accident, but later we got the vehicle and the driver who is now in our custody. “If he has no permit, he will be charged with murder, but if he has a permit, he will be charged with a rush and negligent act,” Bangambaki said.

However, Bangambaki could not readily provide details of the vehicle registration number and the name of the suspect as he was busy with the ongoing recruitment exercise. But sources said Atooli was hit by a saloon car.

According to sources, the family and police friends have organized prayers for Atooli at Kyambogo University as a way of honouring his selfless service today.

Born in 1971, Otaali was reportedly knocked down by a speeding car on Sunday January 25. Burial is scheduled to take place in Kwania, Apac district.
