The Police have revealed that singer Iryn Namubiru was carrying Ecstasy (3, 4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) the time she was arrested in Japan.

The drugs were concealed in peanut butter when she was arrested at the airport. Iryn had been contracted by Hakim Tumwesigye who is based in Japan to perform for the Ugandan community there.

The drug that is in tablet form is described as psychoactive with both stimulant and hallucinogenic properties similar to methamphetamine, commonly referred to as Meth.

The revelation was made my director of Interpol in Uganda Asan Kasingye at the directorate headquarters in Kololo.

Kasingye was meeting Iryn's manager Iryn Thadeus Mubiru, her promoter Balaam Barugahara and Andrew Benon Kibuuka, the Uganda artistes association chairman over Iryn's plight in Japan.true

Kasingye (left) said the Inspector General of Police, Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura, was being updated on every detail coming out of Japan concerning the singer. He said drug trafficking is a national security issue since it is a big source of income for criminals.

Meanwhile Iryn has decried her condition in jail saying she no longer has changing clothes and cannot eat their food which has weakened her.

This was revealed by her Japanese lawyer, Yuko Matsumoto, who was allocated to her by the Government there. The singer is being held at Chiba prison.

Matsumoto sent the communication through Balaam saying Iryn narrated her condition to her in tears. It has also been reported that most Ugandans living in Japan will not dare set foot at the prison to help her out with necessities because of their status in the country.

Lawyer's fees

Iryn's lawyer is understood to have asked for US$20,000 to handle her case but she haggled until it was halved. One of Iryn's promoters, Capt. John Kassami who owns Waterfront Beach in Entebbe and Fusion Band in which the singer performs, is said to be meeting half the costs (US$10,000).

Benon Kibuuka said they have written to the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development under which artistes fall to appraise them of their efforts so far so they can take up the matter.
