A sombre mood hangs over Makerere University as it mourns its renowned Philosophy don, Assoc. Prof.  Sango Mwanahebwa Amisi.

Mwanahebwa died on Sunday January 18 at his home in Katalemwa, located on the outskirts of Kampala.

Janet Nabukeera, the Makerere University Director of Human Resources said Mwanahebwa was attached to the Department of Philosophy in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS).

Mwanahebwa was also the coordinator for the Master in Human Rights Programme. He reportedly endorsed his students for graduation on Friday, two days before he passed on.

CHUSS spokesperson Hasifa Kabejja said Mwanahebwa succumbed to blood clot.

“On Saturday, he is reported to have started feeling some pain in the leg that intensified overtime until Sunday when he passed on,” said Kabejja.

She described Mwanahebwa as “a peace-loving lecturer who often advised people to avoid conflict in all their endeavours.”

A requiem mass for Mwanahebwa was on Tuesday held at St Augustine Chapel in Makerere University.

He was buried on Wednesday at his ancestral home in Mabona village, Kabingo Sub County, Isingiro District.
