Former Netherlands national coach Jan Vlieg has said Uganda has vast table tennis potential.

He however notes that this potential will only crystalise into medals on the big stage with quality preparation.

“When I look at your players, I see the will to win. But that in itself is not enough. Success comes with serious preparation.”

Vlieg, who conducted a one day clinic at Kololo SS on Sunday, said players have to be constantly guided.

“There is still some work to be done with basic techniques. Serious practice is also needed with tactics, he observed.

After learning that Uganda’s elite players play every day, he noted that, that in itself is no guarantee for improvement.

“Mistakes have to be constantly corrected. If that doesn’t happen and you continue playing, you will instead worsen your game by strengthening your mistakes.”

Vlieg however said Africa as a continent still has a lot of work if it is to match other continents.

He promised to further help Uganda. “I will have to find a way to do something. We have to discuss possibilities. I will be back someday.”
As a coach, Vlien won 14 world and European Championship medals with the Netherlands.

New UTTA boss Robert Jjagwe said the clinic is one of his executive’s initial steps to have the sport developed right from the grassroots.

Jjagwe and his team assumed office in about two months ago.
