A nurse at Kagadi government hospital in Kibaale district was last week gunned down by unknown assailants in the middle of Kagadi town.

The deceased identified as Sister Winfred Nakigudde, was the in charge of the maternity department and an HIV counsellor.

She was shot dead at about 8:05pm at her privately owned Mugabi Drug Shop on Kyengaju Street in Kagadi town where she was seated.

An eyewitness who refused to be named said he heard someone screaming: “I am dying, these people are killing me”. Shortly there after gunshots rung out and the shouting stopped.

“Immediately after the gunshots went off a man clad in a jacket emerged from the drug shop with a gun ready to shoot anyone and I ran to hide in a nearby corridor. The man walked away majestically,” said the eyewitness.

People who rushed to the scene after the assailant had fled, found Nakigudde lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds in the fore head and chest.

She was taken to the nearby St. Ambrose Health Centre, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The district Police commander Patrick Ewan told the New Vision that the Police immediately mounted check points on all major roads and two people were arrested and an AK-47 gun with four rounds of ammunition recovered from them.

Ewan identified those arrested as Nicholas Muhumuza and Fred Ssesanga alias Kanywamwenge a boda-boda cyclist at Kagadi taxi park stage who were found with a bag containing a gun.

“We don’t know whether these are the prime suspects, but they are in our custody as investigations into the matter continue,” said Ewan.

Talking at Sunga Police Station Ssesanga denied being involved in the gruesome murder saying they were hired by a man whose identities could not be established to take him to Sunga and he had a bag he claimed had a solar panel.

“We saw this man who told us that he was going to Sunga with his solar panel and gave us sh10,000 because it was night and we did not know that he had a gun,” said Ssesanga.

He said on approaching Sunga Police Station they found a check point and their passenger screamed; “my God what is this” and jumped off the motorcycle and ran into the nearby market abandoning his bag.

Ssesanga said they remained standing and were arrested by the Police and a gun was found in the bag they had.

“We have gotten a document, which has vital leads and am sure we shall arrest all the suspects,” said Ewan, adding that the motive of the murder is yet to be established since the attackers did not take anything from their victim.
