President hails Buhweju farmers

President Yoweri Museveni, who is due to commission the new Buhweju tea factory, has hailed the farmers in the district for promoting tea growing and urged leaders to sensitise them on diversification into rearing dairy cows to boost household incomes.

The President was impressed to learn that the farmers in the area earn a gross income of sh9m per year per acre from the cultivation of tea.

He made the remarks at a meeting with religious and political leaders from Buhweju lead by Buhweju county Member of Parliament Biraaro Ephraim Ganshanga at his country home in Rwakitura, Kiruhura district last Thursday.

The President commended the people of Buhweju for being hard working and promoting transformation to prosperity and was pleased to note that they have not only recognised the value of infrastructure and services, but are fully engaged in income generation to improve their lives. He stressed that the foundation to progress is income generation.

He pledged to start the construction of the Bwizi Bwera- Nsiika road and to serve the population by improving health services in the district through the provision of an ambulance and a district doctor.

The President further said the Government will support Buhweju Technical Institute and Butare Central Primary School which are run by the Catholic Church.

He added that the government will consider the request to compensate the people who lost their property during the liberation struggle in Buhweju.

The Buhweju county MP, Biraaro Ephraim Ganshanga, hailed the President for supporting the expansion of tea growing in Buhweju district. He called on the Government to provide safe water in Nyakashanga and to the upgrade of Nsiika Health Centre IV to a hospital status.
