In October 1989 soon after the NRM government had come to power, MUST became the second public university when it opened its gates to the first 43 students admitted to the Faculty of Medicine .

Origin of MUST

In October 1989 soon after the NRM government had come to power, MUST became the second public university when it opened its gates to the first 43 students admitted to the Faculty of Medicine .

At that time the academic staff consisted of five members; Dr. Ramirez Carlos (Physiologist), Dr. Lorenzo Lopez (Physiologist), Dr. Leonardo Azcuy (Embryologist), Dr. Caridad Diaz (Biochemist) all Cuban and Prof. F.I.B Kayanja (Anatomist).

Dr. C.K. Kibirige the sole administrator and Specioza Birungi was the only secretary.

About MUST

Mbarara University of Science and Technology a thriving residential campus and community also known as MUST lies on the banks of the scenic meandering Rwizi River a tributary of Lake Victoria in Mbarara Municipality along the Kabale highway, 286 kilometers, southwest of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

Over the years it has won acclaimed national and international recognition for best practices in outreach and community relations from Association of Commonwealth Universities, European Union, Civil Society of Uganda, its products can be described as the best community oriented development workers and health care professionals in our land and beyond.

Today MUST has a population of over 3,000 students perusing various Development, Management and Health sciences programs. By February 2013 MUST had contributed a total of 6,687 graduates to Uganda’s human resource pool. Learning and living are intimately intertwined at MUST.

Extra Curricular activities, professional student associations and clubs, performances, forums and sports and games beckon students as well as the communities around the University.

The Move to Kihumuro Campus

MUST is developing a new and spacious campus situated 7km on Mbarara-Bushenyi Highway at Kihumuro.

Development on this new campus is ongoing and in early march 2013 the first phase of the new Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology a five story building was handed over to the university.

When completed will bring to fruition the whole spectrum of this great University of Science and Technology with the current Mbarara Town campus eventually becoming a College of Health Sciences.
