National Referral Hospital, Mulago ’s main gate has been closed to pave way for renovation.

The patients and caretakers who have been using the main gate will now use a small gate near the hospital’s mortuary.

“We cannot leave the main gate open when there is a lot of construction going on,” Enock Kusasira said in an interview.

He also said that cars should be parked in the yard next to the small gate.

The construction work is being carried out in phases, starting with Block A, which has wards 1A to 6A.

President Yoweri Museveni recently officially launched the re-modeling of the hospital. The rehabilitation of the hospital will cost$29m while the equipment will cost $20m.

The money is part of a loan from the African Development Bank (ADB) to increase access to quality and affordable health care services for Kampala.

Built in 1913, the hospital remains the only national referral hospital in the Country. In 1962, Old Mulago hospital merged with the New Mulago hospital to form the Mulago hospital complex.
