KAMPALA - The Police is probing the weekend murder of the Unilever manager in charge of Tororo, Busia and Iganga.

His body was found in a bush in Walusubi village near Namawojjolo in Mukono district.

Unilever is a multinational consumer goods company whose products include food, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products.

The trussed up body of Shadrack Makanga, 36, was discovered on Saturday evening, a day after he had embarked on a journey to the city.

A day later, his wrecked car was recovered hundreds of kilometres away in Kiryandongo district, along the Kampala-Gulu highway.

Police and close relatives said Makanga, a father of two, had set off from Tororo in a Nissan X-trail registration number UAV 186D on Friday night to visit his family in the city.

He was expected in the city at about 1:00am.

His body was found on Saturday morning, with the hands and legs tied. It was taken to the City Mortuary where it was identified by relatives.

Detectives probing this case say that later that evening, the Police in Kiryandongo was notified about a Nissan X-trail that was crashed in a road accident.

The vehicle’s registration had been plucked off but the Police traced the number from the window.

Police and family sources suspect that Makanga could have been jacked and later murdered. No one was found at the scene of the accident though the Police said both the drivers and co-driver’s seat were stained with blood.

“We are treating it as a homicide although the motive is not clear,” Mark Odong, the Police homicide boss said on Wednesday.

He said at the time the Police recovered the body, there was no evidence of a struggle at the scene though there were marks on the body to suggest a struggle.

“We suspect that they could have murdered him from some place and dumped the body there. A post-mortem report indicates that Makanga was strangled,” he added.

It is not clear whether Makanga left Tororo with some occupants in the car who could have turned against him or whether he fell victim to car robbers along the way who murdered him.
