Dr. Martin Aliker, the senior presidential adviser on special duties, has been appointed the acting chairman of the National Insurance Corporation, following the death of the chairman, Dr. Remi Olowude, last month.

Olowude was the founder and executive vice-chairman of Industrial and General Insurance Plc, with investment footprints in Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Rwanda.

Speaking at the commendation service for Olowude last week, Aliker said Olowude was a generous man with a compassionate heart.

“Olowude lived ahead of his time.  He set up the first indigenous privately owned insurance company in Nigeria and grew its shareholders’ fund from sh322m in 1992 to sh300b as at June 2013. He was a consummate businessman, an acclaimed insurance professional and will surely be missed by all,” he said.

NIC managing director Bayo Folayan said Olowude was a humane leader and will be missed by the insurance fraternity.

In her remarks, Syda Bbumba, the former finance minister, said during the challenging times of NIC, Olowude was not afraid. He stood strong and faced the challenge head-on. Olowude will be buried in Nigeria on Friday.
