Rallying crews give views on 2013 competition rules

IN a bid to defuse persistent clashes between competitors and officials, Uganda Motor Rally Drivers Club (UMRDC) has had a hand in the 2013 national competition rules.

According to UMRDC secretary Ahmed Ssenyonjo over 60 drivers and navigators yesterday held a seminar at Esela Country Club on Sunday, in which they reviewed 2012 competition rules and suggested changes in the new regulations.

“This is a mutually beneficial workshop. Our suggestions will be integrated in the 2013 national competition rules. Our members will understand the rules better and have played a part in making them which will foster com¬pliance,” Ssenyonjo told New Vision in a telephone interview.

The seminar, attended by Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) vice president Mukiibi Katende discussed the International Sporting Code, events supplementary regulations and article to 254 of Appendix J which guides competitors on local construction of rally cars.

FIA sanctioned scrutineerer Moses Seguya, former FMU vice president Kisitu Mayanja, Omar Mayanja and Katende made presentations at the workshop moderated by UMRDC treasurer and professional trainer Peter Kakaire.

“This training will enhance our knowledge which will consequently prevent misguided complaints that cause unnecessary rifts between competitors and officials. While we expect FMU and clubs to do their work to our satisfaction we must also act within regulations,” Ssenyonjo explained.

The season gets underway with the FMU Sprint on January 27 ahead of the National Championship that starts with the Mbarara Rally in February.
