A total of 56 men have been circumcised at Iganga Islamic Medical Centre as part of the ongoing Safe Male Circumcision exercise.
Latif Yesse, the centre’s administrator, said there had been a good response towards the free service, adding that several adolescents had embraced it.
Charles Kitaka, the lead surgeon at the centre, said research had shown that circumcised men are less prone to contracting HIV.
“We not only circumcise them but offer free screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections to mainly the youth,” Kitaka said on Friday.
He said they carry out circumcision in such a way that one is able to walk away after surgery with their undergarmets on.
“We give them pain killers. After three weeks, the man can have sex. If he does so before this period elapses, complications in the healing process can arise,” Kitaka said.
Dr. David Muwanguzi, the district health officer, said circumcision improves men’s hygiene as the foreskin where a lot of dirt collects is removed.
