Farmer groups in Eastern region are set to benefit from a project aimed at improving post-harvest handling, storage, processing and marketing of agricultural products.

The project is funded by the Department for International Development (DFID). Mark Lowcock, the DFID Permanent Secretary, said: “We would like to help farmers to increase their house hold incomes through farming and be able to take their children to schools.

” “We want to help farmers get financial services in a viable way. We will work with licensed banks to extend these services to people in rural areas by giving them loans,” he added.

According to Rogers Kakeeto, the head of marketing and business development at Opportunity Bank, the project is worth 300,000 pounds.

He also said the money will be given to the farmers through the Agro save and extra save loan service, to support value addition and business development services.

The project will support over 3,000 farmers in improving post-harvest handling, storage and marketing of agricultural products. It will be implemented in Jinja, Kamuli, Kaliro, Mayuge, Iganga and Mbale districts.
