Kampala women lifted the National Special Olympics soccer title after beating a select team from Northern region in the final.

The seven-aside soccer tournament took place at Lugogo hockey pitch on Saturday. All the players who performed well in the regional events made it to the national games.

Special Olympics are games for people with mental disabilities and the world version of the games will take place in Los Angeles, USA next year. Kampala and Northern had played out to a goalless draw before the post-match penalty shoot-out to decide the winner.

Eastern region dominated the volleyball event, with their team lifting the title while Western athletes Justin Nyamahunge and Benjamin Kibuuka qualified to compete in the men and women 100m and 200m events at the world games.

Swimming was held at Jacaranda swimming pool and Feni Larry and Kevin Lubega emerged victorious in their different categories. Phiona Namparara won in the women’s category.

Uganda has been given 26 slots including athletics (2), swimming pool (3), open water (1), unified volleyball (1) and a 7-aside female soccer team.

Korea International Cooperation Agency volunteers were in the country to help screen and treat the Special Olympics athletes in conjunction with Kampala Lions Club.
