NAIROBI - Just like their female counterparts,  Kyadondo select boys U-19 team won the 2014 Safaricom 7s schools category unbeaten after  beating Impala Academy 14-7 at the Safaricom Stadium Kasarani in Kenya.

Paul Epillo and Eric Nyeko scored each a try while Allan Omoding managed two conversions as the Uganda boys ended the tournament with an unbeaten streak.

Youngster Allan Nyeko was voted the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP).

Coach Robert Sseguya said his side won because they work hard as a unit and were also determined to revenge last year’s semi-final defeat.

“We were focused but most important is that the boys didn’t want a humiliation of last year when they lost in the semi-final,” he said.

He further appealed to the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) and other clubs to emulate Kyadondo and start sending the developing teams to such competitions so that many players are exposed for the benefit of the national team’s future.

“Yes the union needs to bring two teams in such a tournament but also other clubs like Kampala should do the same so that we have many players exposed for the good of Uganda rugby,” said the coach, and later adding that he will have a second side in the tournament next year.

Meanwhile, Mwangi Muthee, the Kenya Rugby Union chairman has urged the URU to focus on the young talents.

He told New Vision shortly after the Ugandan side’s win that the local talent needs to be developed by means of a strategic plan in order to transform young players into a strong future team.

“The future of Africa’s rugby is the youth and that is why we give them such platforms so that they can learn to make mistakes and correct them in front of such huge crowds,”  he said.
