Africa Netball World Cup Qualifier

The She Cranes hope of making another historical appearance at the World Cup came to life after MPs of the ninth parliament rescued the national netball team with 14 air tickets to Gaborone, Botswana.

The team of 12 players and two officials departed at 7pm on Thursday aboard Kenya Airways ahead of the Africa Netball World Cup Qualifiers starting tomorrow at the Bona Courts.

Each MP contributed sh100,000 to raise sh38.5m towards the team, and according to team manager Jocelyn Ucanda, the money was enough relief to cater for the players’ tickets.

“It’s enough relief and this will enable us arrive early so that we are not locked out like it happened two years back in South Africa,” Ucanda stated during the team’s flag off at the National Council of Sports at Lugogo.

Uganda finished third behind champions South Africa and hosts Malawi at an event early last year but with the two Southern Africa nations not in this tournament, coach Fred Mugerwa believes his side will book a slot to the World Cup scheduled for next year in Australia.

“We are sure of leading the show now that the two threats are not in contention,” Mugerwa promised.
