FASHION COURT: How can I keep my jacket?

Oct 18, 2012

I finally got a velvet jacket but while at an outdoor function, it rained and my jacket got dirty strains. It now looks bad like a cat that has lost its fur. How can I care for velvet?

Velvet is a soft luxurious fabric, that has a combination of materials. It has a bit of silk and cotton wool and requires special care.

With your velvet jacket, you cannot go wrong. Because of its friendly hues, a velvet outfit can bring colour to an otherwise dull look and the texture appeals to the touch.

Some extra care may rejuvenate your ruined jacket. Velvet is best straightened by steam. The heat and weight of the iron crushes the velvet pile and leaves iron imprints while scorching the fabric.

Rather, just hold the jacket in a bathroom filled with steam and the creases will come out. For stubborn areas, hold the spot over boiling water without wetting it, so that the steam does the job.

To eliminate the fluff that velvet attracts, invest in a suede shoe brush. Use top to down gentle strokes to remove the dust collected.

For spills, do not wash or blot. Blotting wet velvet presses the pile down and ruins the fabric.

Store your velvet outfit on a hanger in an area where it will not crease or get folds easily. Folds can be a menace to remove.
There is still hope for your jacket. Take it to dry cleaners. These professionals have tools that can restore velvet pile.
