KAMPALA - Designs for the eight-lane 80km Kampala–Jinja Express Highway are nearing completion.

The $800m (about sh2 trillion) toll road project, to be financed through the Public Private Partnership, starts from Nakawa in Kampala and goes up to the new Nile Bridge in Jinja.

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) had contracted a company, Scott Wilson, to carry out surveys and evaluation of properties in preparation for the construction of the road.

The project will affect the residents of Mutungo, Kito, Namataba, Kirinya, Senyi, Kitale, Kyungu, Kasokoso, Kasenge, Mutanzige and Nakawa.

“The consultant is currently surveying properties on the various proposed routes and preparing a resettlement action plan,” said Dan Alinange, the UNRA spokesperson.

Alinange said the exercise was free-of-charge and appealed to the public to be vigilant about fraudsters.

“No one should charge you for survey works.”

Alinange noted that Scott Wilson officials are required to have company identity cards and go through local leaders to avoid fraudsters taking advantage, adding that the consultant was not mandated to process land titles.

“Land titles should be processed by property owners through authorised government agencies.”

Alinange said UNRA was committed to compensating all persons affected by its projects.

“As we have done in the past, before your land is reserved for a public purpose, you will be notified by UNRA of the proposals and you will be given an opportunity to express your views.”
