As the Uganda Golf team celebrated winning the 16th edition of the East African Challenge at Entebbe Club on Sunday they were quickly reminded by UGU president Kiryowa Kiwanuka that it was only the beginning of many tasks ahead.

The Johnnie Walker sponsored team members will on top of competing in the Uganda open that starts on Wednesday also prepare for the Zambian president’s cup  tournament that starts in a fortnight and the Zone 6 championship to be hosted by Uganda in April next year.

Uganda who will send a team of four to Zambia will renew their rivalry with the Kenyan team who have also been invited for the tournament.

“We are proud of them we’re going to continue supporting the team and ensure they continue playing. We shall host them to a victory dinner after the Uganda open and at that gala they will receive a prize from the golfing fraternity which we shall unveil then,” Kiwanuka said.

Kenya captain Nelson Simwa was lost for words as Uganda fans and players celebrated their victory and promised to revenge in the Zone 6 championship that Uganda will host in April 2015.

“The point we lost against Rwanda was the only point we needed to draw with Uganda and take the trophy back to Kenya but the other match that let us down was the one that Tanzanian Victor Joseph led 5-up going on number ten so I’m also shocked that the Ugandan came back and squared the match, but we tried our best,” Kenya captain Nelson Simwa said.

“After this we’re going to Zambia to play president’s cup so we are going back to training for two weeks before we go to Zambia but next year for zone 6 we shall come back with full force so that we take this trophy,” Simwa remarked.

“It is a great win, the boys have made us proud again though it wasn’t easy. We stuck to our game plan from day one which was to win our matches against Kenya and the boys we fielded today managed to do it,” Uganda coach Amos Kamya said.

Uganda celebrations went late in the night as the winners danced themselves lame after a sumptuous dinner at the 19th hole where the victors were crowned by East African Golf Federation president David Nyakango.

Despite losing on the course other players joined the partying with artiste Sheeba thrilling them with some of her top hits.

Uganda Breweries through their luxury whisky portfolios (Johnnie Walker) have bankrolled the event to a tune of sh200m.
