KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni has warned Kampala city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago against waging protracted political battles with his government, advising the controversial politician to spend his youthful energy to fight poverty instead.

“There is this man called Erias. Erias Lukwago thinks he can fight Museveni. Is fighting Museveni more important than fighting poverty? You need to get services and the problem is not money.

“However, the routes that bring money were blocked by elected leaders like this man, who instead of fighting poverty is fighting Museveni,” he said.

In November 2013, a special KCCA meeting chaired by the minister for presidency and Kampala, Frank Tumwebaze, impeached Lukwago.

Lukwago has since resorted to courts of law to challenge that decision.

Museveni, who was addressing over 500 NRM cadres in Kampala Central division at Nakivubo Blue Primary School, also advised city dwellers to work closely with Jennifer Musisi, the Kampala City Council Authority Executive Director, to spur more development in Kampala.

“You have now started to see what we are doing here in Kampala. Look at the Kafumbe-Mukasa Road. It used to be characterised with mud and dust, but we have worked on it. Therefore, I want you to support Musisi and others so that they can continue to develop Kampala.”

He also commended Faridah Mayanja for utilising well the sh81m he gave her to improve the household incomes of people living in Kisenyi.

The President also responded to calls from the audience about the behaviour of Abdallah Kitata, the chairperson of the Kampala Bodaboda Association.

“You have said Kitata is a thief. I will look into the matter,” he said. Museveni thanked cadres for supporting the NRM and also appealed to them to fight against leaders who frustrate the Government’s efforts on industrialisation.

“You have to support my philosophy of improving industries in Uganda and shun those leaders who are fighting against industrial development. When a factory is built, it is you the young people to benefit not me the old man.

“What have made European countries to develop are the industries. So, help to fight those who disrupt our mission of industrialization,” said the NRM leader.

The president warned the youth to avoid divisive politics that is anchored on religion and tribe.

“NRM was not the first party in Uganda. Other parties were around — Uganda People’s Congress, Democratic Party and Kabaka Yekka were there, but they all failed to keep peace in Uganda because they preached the wrong message. This training, therefore, strengthens the NRM philosophy of peace and development.”

Aisha Kabanda, the Kampala resident city commissioner, said the trained youth will act as a reserve force of Kampala that will help in matters of security.

Godfrey Nyakana, the Kampala Central Division Mayor, asked Museveni to meet the division mayors in the city so that they can discuss the challenges they are facing.

However, Museveni did not give a categorical reply on the Nyakana matter.

The enthusiastic youth that underwent a 30-day training were selected by Allan Kajik, the Kampala deputy resident city commissioner.
