Ugandan players and officials were confident of winning the East African Golf Challenge going into day one single matches at Entebbe Club on Friday.

UGU president Kiryowa Kiwanuka told a press conference before the flag rising ceremony that marked the beginning of the tournament that Uganda were the favorites to win the championship because they had prepared well.

“I’m excited that we have been able to put this together, I would like to thank Entebbe Club for hosting the countries and our sponsors Johnnie Walker for financing the tournament. Our boys are ready and everyone is upbeat, we have very interesting time,” Kiwanuka said.

The three-day event was officially opened by Minister of State for Industry James Mutenda who was amazed by the youthful composition of the teams of the six countries.

He said such games will help in consolidating the East African integration.

Uganda Golf Union president Kiryowa Kiwanuka urged the players of the six nations not only to enjoy their game but also make friends before the flags of the six nations were raised.

“You are at the Mecca of golf in East Africa so feel at home and enjoy the game,” tournament director Innocent Kihika told the visiting teams in reference to the host club that was established in 1901.

Action starts Friday with a singles round before the foursomes and the four-ball-better-ball rounds on Saturday and another singles round on Sunday.
