The winners of the City Tyres Chenga Challenge U-14 football tournament this Saturday will walk away with a juicy purse of sh5m.
This was revealed during the draw for the grand finale that was conducted by Friends of Football (FOF) Technical Director Eddie Butindo at Mandela Auto Zone- Sixth Street Industrial Area.
Ten regions were pooled in two groups of A and B. Group A has Alpha Junior Academy-Kalungu (South Buganda region), Kids of Arua (West Nile region), Katuna Emma Boys (Kabale region), Jinja United (Nile region) and Bunyoro Kitara (Rwenzori Region) Group B has Kampala Central (Kampala region), Gulu Junior Academy (Northern region), Sheema FC (Western Region), True Vine Academy of Tororo (Elgon region) and SOUL (East Buganda region).
Kampala region, who won the title last year through Kitebi Primary School, will be represented by Kampala Central as the defending champions were knocked out in the preliminaries.
Former FOF players Mike Mutyaba and Allan Nsubuga were also involved in the draw that was witnessed by Mandela Group of Companies Chairman Ahmed ‘Mandela’ Omar and FUFA technical director Asuman Lubowa.
The knockout matches will start on Thursday at Masaka Recreational Ground with each region being represented by 20 players. Friends of Football will monitor 38 players as they seek to select the best players of the tournament that will tour Kigali, Rwanda from December 5-10.
FOF has been Instructmental in youth football in the country and has produced several players that include goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan, Daniel ‘Mzee’ Sserunkuma, Godfrey Walusimbi, Robert Odongkara among others. The runners up will get sh3m.
The MVP of the tournament will get a one year fees scholarship among other accolades.
