Census: No counting of people at night - UBOS

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has clarified that there will be no counting of people at night during the National Population and Housing Census that begins on Thursday.

The national census coordinator, Francis W. Mashate and the institution’s public relations and communications manager, Godfrey Nabongo, said Monday that the census night has been construed to mean that people will be counted at night among some sections of the public.

According to UBOS, the census night is the official date that will be relied upon to know the number of people who will have been in Uganda for this census. The census night is August 27.

Although UBOS conducted the previous censuses during the night, Nabongo said, the institution stopped the practice for the safety of the people and the enumerators.

“We would like to correct the misconception that there will be enumeration at night. We no longer count people at night because it was not tenable,” he added.

However, Mashate explained that the census night was maintained because it will be recorded as the date when Uganda carried out the census. The ten days' enumeration exercise will end on September 6

“Even if the enumerators came to your house on August 30 they will ask who slept in this house on August 27.
Only people who will have slept in Uganda that day will be counted and regarded to have been in the country on the census night,” he added.

The provisional and final census results, Mashate said, will be available by the end of November 2014 and December 2015 respectively.

The provisional results will give the total population number, sex and distribution at a district level while the final results will feature detailed information on religion, age structure, tribe and fertility rate among others.
