Police on Monday sealed off the gardens at Centenary Park, an area measuring about two acres in the city centre where the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) intends to restore into a public park.

Anti-riot Police were deployed around the gardens, barely three days after KCCA reclaimed the area from Nalongo Estates, which acquired a 10-year lease offer to manage the area.

The Kampala Central Division Mayor, Godfrey Nyakana stormed the gardens and demanded that the police officers vacate the area to leave immediately.

“What are you doing here? This is private property. My wife is bedridden because you came here and caused chaos,” Nyakana stated.

One of the police officers said they were undertaking ‘security measures,’ a statement that infuriated Nyakana.

Last week, KCCA attempted to raze down some of the buildings at Centenary Park citing breach of an agreement in which Nalongo Estates would not to erect a permanent structures in the area.
