The admission letters for Kyambogo University students admitted under the People with Disabilities (PWDs) government scholarship scheme is ready, according to the institution’s spokesman Lawrence Madete.

“There was a delay in the sending of the lists from the joint admission body which is in charge of government admissions, however the lists are here and the students should be able to receive their admission letters now,” said Madete.

15 PWDs have been admitted to study at Kyambogo University under the scheme. Their sponsorship is effective from the 2014/2015 academic year until they complete the programmes.

The 15 include Gloria Tinkasimire, Rose Nakiwunga, Emmanuel Ntaborwa, Joseph Akoli, Brian Tumwesigye, Ivan Byamukama, Didas Tumuhimbise, Godfrey Gonda, Benjamin Ayebare, Akimu Kamukama and Naphtali Rumazimisi.

Others are Benon Bilabi, Moses Ayoli, Allan Ssekandi, Ivan Muhairwe, Timothy Egwelu, oliver Nankinga, Winfred Nahwera, Caroline Natunkunda and Ambrose Ekwong.

Madete’s remarks follow complaints by some of the students. The students had alleged that they were yet to receive their admission letters, days after Kyambogo freshmen reported for the new academic year.

“I am not happy with Kyambogo University because PWDs who were admitted on government sponsorship have not got their admission letters yet, while; those on national merit got theirs 2 weeks ago. Isn’t this discrimination? Why do public universities separate PWDs?” complained one student who withheld his/her name.

“Makerere University dispatched the admission letters of all its PWDs, why hasn’t Kyambogo done the same? The first semester started yesterday. I was recently at Kyambogo to collect my admission letter only to be told to return five days later. When I returned five days later I was told to return ‘next week’. What is happening?”
