Diana Nanfuka is an enthusiastic young woman, who has learnt the importance of using her voice to bring about change in her community.

She was born 20 years ago in Kikajo, Wakiso district and hails from a big family, with four brothers and five sisters.

Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Makerere University, Nanfuka spends her free time carrying out missionary work as a Scout.

In fact, it is through her work that she felt compelled to join U-report. “I now know about issues that affect children and young people in Uganda,” she says.

Her passion for helping vulnerable people was inspired by spending quality time with her father.

This year, Nanfuka spent time at Buddo Hill working with the Scouts “I felt happy because we were supplying families with basic needs such as soap, sugar, clothes and books,” she explains.

One of U-report’s most recent poll questions on violence in schools, reminded her of her experiences during secondary school.

“When children were slow to understand in lessons, failed an exam paper or made noise in class, sometimes out of frustration, teachers would hit them on the head or cane them,” Nanfuka says.

She adds that the type of discipline depended on the severity of the situation. Nanfuka strongly feels that the Government should guide the public and private schools on more child-friendly forms of discipline.

Due to her enthusiastic and regular responses to the weekly U-report poll questions, she was selected to participate in two U-report TV programmes, one on the Children’s Act and the second on HIV/AIDS.

U-report uses their TV programmess to raise young people’s awareness of development issues in their communities.

The also aim to provide a platform for young people to air their opinions and experiences.
This has had a huge impact on Nanfuka’s self–confidence. She now regularly speaks out on these issues and looks forward to answering the weekly poll questions.
