Youth Olympic Games open in Nanjing China

Florence Seera is Uganda’s flag bearer as she will lead Uganda’s 12 man contingent at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in the Chinese city of Nanjing Saturday evening at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.

Florence Seera is Uganda’s flag bearer as she will lead Uganda’s 12 man contingent at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in the Chinese city of Nanjing Saturday evening at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.

Uganda has a team of six athletes out of the 3,787 from the 204 countries for the 13 days competition in 28 sports disciplines. The six are to compete for honours in athletics, badminton, table tennis and rowing.

The team residing at the Youth Olympic Village is led by UOC treasurer Godfrey Nuwagaba as Chief De Mission. It includes badminton star Shamim Bangi as the youth ambassador and athletes Steven Mande (1500m), Geoffrey Balimumiti (800m) and Janat Chemusto (3000m), badminton player Daniel Mihigo. Rowing has Constance Mbambu while table tennis has Florence Seera.

IOC President Thomas Bach and the IOC honorary member Jacques Rogge will preside over the opening ceremony for the two week event.

At the last games that were held in Singapore fours years back, Uganda got one medal, a bronze courtesy of Zacharia Kiprotich in the boys 2000m Steeplechase.
