A few days back Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) advised the current government of Uganda to scrap university scholarships. This is very bad.

The claim by UPC that the free education does not favour all Ugandans is wrong. in Uganda there are very many people who have taken their children to school yet they cannot manage the payments but the Government came up with policies such as universal primary education and universal a secondary education plus the free a scholarship that is given to best performers of the year, which is very good because it has helped many Ugandans to take their children to university even without money.

So if any one is saying that the free education is useless, then he or she is a liar because students are picked from all parts of the country after the selection is made, which means that is free and fair to all Ugandans irrespective of religion, tribe or even colour but all it takes is being academically excellent that year and hence join the free sponsorship from the Government

Apart from being free and supporting the parents that cannot afford university fees it also encourages competition amongst students and schools because we are living in a world of competition then this is very good because various schools have to compete so that they can take students to the university for free.

So this is has helped improve the academic structure of Uganda because students do engage themselves in serious competition, which results into good performance similarly it also encourages teachers to teach their students very well so that they can be happy when results come back because the excellence of a student is the pride of the teacher.

In conclusion, the Government sponsorship should not be scraped but rather the Government should add  on the number of students it takes on so that students can enjoy it more because very many of our parents cannot afford university dues but yet they are so much interested in taking their sons and daughters to the university.
