STATE Minister for Transport Stephen Chemoiko Chebrot, has said that the Ministry of Works and Transport has developed the National Construction Industry policy and has pushed for the enactment of the Building Control Act.

Chebrot made the revelation at a three days 12th edition of the Construction and Interior Exhibition at Lugogo Show Grounds main hall. The expo has attracted foreign exhibitors from Italy, Israel, Turkey, and Kenya among others.

“The ministry has a duty to address the challenges in the construction industry by developing a suitable policy and legal framework to promote the industry,” he added.

Chebrot also said that under the National Construction Industry Policy, is the proposed Uganda Industry Construction Commission (UCICO) Bill that intends to create various opportunities for supporting local contractors.

He said, “The ministry is making efforts to finalize the commencement of the Building Control Act, by putting in place the Building Control Code, as well as setting up the National Building Review Board and its secretariat.

He called upon all the local contractors to work professionally and to avoid mismanagement of their contracts by doing shoddy work and at times abandoning sites in spite of having received payment which practice consequently makes them uncompetitive vis-à-vis their foreign counter parts.

“It is gratifying that the scope of exhibitors include companies engaged in real estate development, road construction, roofing products, paints and finishes, site equipment and mortgage solutions,” he said.

Chebrot noted that the ministry will address all the bottlenecks that hinder the industry to play its rightful role in making our economy competitive and preferred destination for investment.

The ministry in particular and the government appreciate the contribution of a developed infrastructure as the surest way to attract investment in manufacturing, services and ICTS sectors.
