President Yoweri Museveni has re-energized the NRM party buoyancy with a colorful launch of a fundraising ceremony for the Movement House, raising over sh2b from 400 excited members in a matter of hours.
The money was raised at a dinner organized by the newly inaugurated NRM Finance Commission led by party treasurer Amelia Kyambadde who is also the minister for trade.
President Museveni introduced the Masindi 20th February Account No. 0121152263500 at the Housing Finance Bank in memory of the decisive attack on the Kabamba army barracks in 1984 in which youthful revolutionaries led by Yoweri Museveni turned a chapter in Uganda’s history to usher in peace and development after decades of war.
The Movement House will be a 27 storied building to symbolize the 27 armed men who ran over the barracks. It will also mark 27 years next year of the NRM party rule in Uganda.
The account had already accumulated two billion shillings in private contributions, making the total contributions of four billion shillings.
The Secretariat needs sh30b for the Movement House that will constitute conference facilities, shopping complex, Roof Garden, theatres and also host the NRM offices. It is billed to be the tallest building on completion in two years.
No cash will be collected as members will either write cheques or deposit directly on the account and keep proof of deposit.
“When discussing these issues, some other ideas came up. Why don’t we have our members as shareholders? The first building can be a donation to the party, then we use the same formulae for the second building in which the party owns half and the other half is for shareholders and the third building for our shareholders etc. This is an easy way of accumulating wealth for our party to become a powerhouse, because whatever we want to do, we can do,” the President said.
He added that at one point they wanted to invest in a modern abattoir building that cost about 20 million dollars but they could not raise the money.
“But with this capacity, we can raise money to build an abattoir for our incomes. Some of our politicians these days get into problems by mortgaging their houses for politics. This is madness, it shouldn’t happen. This effort will not only support the party, but support our country economically and support our members,” he said.
After a detailed history of the NRM struggle and its funding background, President Museveni said after successfully building the Workers House using NSSF money worth 15million dollars, he came up with the idea of the Movement House using the same formular.
“During elections, I get over 5 million votes. If as a party we got only 100,000 of our supporters to contribute sh300,000 each. That would be sh30b enough for the building,” he said.
NRM Secretary General who is also the Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi gave a detailed overview of the future plans for the party including consideration for investing in Hotels, shopping malls, water parks – a complex that he says will be one of the biggest in East and Central Africa.
The Chairperson Finance Commission Amelia Kyambadde said the party is embarking on a new revolution in the history of Uganda.
“All of you have contributed to the fundamental change in Uganda. This is your sweat. Now we need to consolidate our achievements by contributing towards this monument,” she said.
