A police man was on Friday night killed in a city suburb while in pursuit of armed thugs. One of the thugs was also put out of action and an AK 47 rifle, recovered, police said.

Corporal David Kyambadde, the deputy Commander of the police flying squad in Kawempe was gunned down in an 8:00pm incident in Kawempe, Kawala. He was part of a bigger part of operatives working on a tip off that had been trailing and lay in wait for thugs.

“We got information that they (thugs) had planned to kill a certain woman at a supermarket and we moved in to arrest and foil the murder,” Police flying squad boss Herman Owomugisha said, referring to Kyambadde as a hero.

“He will be accorded a heroes burial. He died a hero,” Owomugisha said. The incident occurred as the operatives lay in wait.

“The thugs came but one of them detected the trap and opened fire, killing Kyambadde but he was also neutralized by the team,” Owomugisha said adding that they had not yet identified the thug.  Kyambadde was killed by a barrage of bullets. The other thugs are said to have fled though police said the hunt is still on for them.

“This is the second firearm we are recovering from the same place in a space of days,” he said. Both bodies were removed from the scene and transferred to the Mulago mortuary for postmortem. Kyambadde who joined police in 2005 will be laid to rest on Monday in Mubende district.

The incident raises lots of concern given the sporadic manner in which police officers have lost their lives this year.  On June 26, unknown gunmen attacked and burnt a church in Kyegegwa district, killed overnight worshippers and an Assistant Inspector of Police, Grace Mwine.

In June Bright Mukama, a former detainee at Luzira prison attacked Nsambya police barracks and killed a police officer, Cyprian Mukama.

Previously in May another Police officer Hajji Abdu Ssebagala also attached to the police flying squad was shot dead on his way home in Rubaga division.
