Kipsiro favourite to win 5000m gold in Glasgow

There was buzz of activity in Uganda’s camp as 13 of the 15 runners expected in the last group jetted in on Friday for athletics action starting today.
Double Commonwealth gold medalist Mose Kipsiro led the group, which includes Abraham Kiplimo, Phillip Kiplimo and Solomon Mutai, who will this morning compete in the marathon.
The marathon will have its flag-off and finish at Hampden Park, which serves as Scotland’s national stadium and home of Scottish league side Queens Park FC.
Abraham Kiplimo, who clocked two hours 9:23 seconds in the Beppu-Oita marathon in February in Japan, will be Uganda’s medal favourite.
Competitors will race for medals on Glasgow’s traditional marathon course on what has been forecast as a bright morning.
“We have adequately prepared and expect good results,” promised coach Benjamin Longiros shortly after arrival.
The spotlight shifts to Hampden Park’s interior in the afternoon with track and field events.
The Emily Nanziri, Halima Nakaayi and Shida Leni trio that arrived here in the advance group two weeks ago, starts off Uganda’s track campaign in the 400m heats.
The day ends with the men’s 5000m final where Uganda will have Kipsiro, Timothy Toroitich and Moses Kibet in action.
Kipsiro comes in as favourite having won the event at the last games.
Jacob Araptany and Emmanuel Tugumisirize are still being awaited.
