ACAPULCO - A French-American motorcyclist reported missing in January while traveling to Brazil has been found dead with signs of foul play, an official said Thursday.

The decomposed body of Harry Devert, 32, was found July 10 in the town of La Union in the southern state of Guerrero. He had set out from New York en route to Brazil.

His body showed signs of strangulation, said Inaky Blanco Cabrera, a prosecutor in the state.

His remains were confirmed by a coroner, he said.

Devert had dual US-French nationality.

He was on his way to Brazil for the World Cup, which concluded last Sunday, and was then to head on to the tip of South America in Ushuaia, Argentina.

He had been writing a blog called "A New Yorker Travels."

The last word from him was January 25 when he communicated with his girlfriend as he passed through the western state of Michoacan.

Tamaulipas, Michoacan and Guerrero are all torn by drug cartel violence. Kidnappings and extortion are common there.
