The success of Mengo Hospital has greatly depended on committed members of staff who work hard to meet the demands of the increasing patients, according to the board of governors chairman, Richard Kiboneka. Kiboneka reveals that for the time he has served at the hospital, a lot of changes have transpired both in the administration and in the hospitals as a whole.

The most rewarding work, however, has been watching students thrive academically, socially, personally and communally through the training acquired at the hospital.

Mengo Hospital has been transformed by the construction of a new dental clinic, eye clinic and new ultra sound equipment with a recently refurbished the theatre, which will be opened in the next three months. These clinics and departments are now serving as some of the best in this country.

With the inauguration of a new board that has served for the last 10 years, the hospital, which mainly depended on donors has in the past three years strived to be self-reliant as Kiboneka explains.

Management of the hospital feels that there is need to cater for categories of people like the clergy and their families, teachers and other community members who cannot afford their treatment. It is against this background that they are trying to be innovative by opening up a private out patient clinic or department.

This department is for the high class citizens who need special care and from such funds they can assist the low class patients. Like any institution, Mengo Hospital is also faced with many challenges ranging from old structures to old medical equipment and limited funding from the Government.

The administration of the hospital believes that with full cooperation from the Government, the public and effectiveness of staff, they can live to serve another centenary.

“The  management, staff and board of governors of Mengo Hospital, would like to express their gratitude to the people of Uganda, government and its donors since its inception 115  years ago,” he says.
