How we roll on Valentine's

Behold, St Valentine`s Day is near, and as the older folks gear up to dot our streets with roses (never mind that most of them  flowers are fake plastics), I can’t help, but ponder what the young`uns  have up their sleeves.

As we rub off the hangover of Xmas and New Year’s, are we as enthusiastic about the 14th of Feb, or is it, but another overly hyped fad?

Since most of you are set to be at school this Val’s Day, shall you bury your faces in books and act like it don’t matter, or will you steal off some time to celebrate puppy love?.

I sought some answers on this lovey-dovey subject and came out with some really stunning revelations.  One David Okello from a mixed school in Mukono tells of how he intends to sneak away with his squeeze in one of the school hallways after prep to exchange flowers and sweet nothings.

That’s if Lady Luck smiles his way and the warden does not decide to patrol in his location. Gracie, who is a day scholar in Luzira, divulges that the situation is more lover-friendly on their side of the world, which accords them opportunities to don their red and black vey and strut to the school compound to pose excitedly for the paparazzi.

I chanced upon another daughter of Eve, Chantal she said, was the name she went by. She offered some exciting details about how she has witnessed her girlfies lavished with designer wristwatches, jewelry and love notes in class to the astonishment and envy of other not-so-lucky ones. Chantal happens to be at an all-girls’ school on Masaka Road in Wakiso.

On the flip-side of the coin though, Peter Musoke, who is at a prominent private school in Kampala, boasts of how he does not need Val’s Day to showcase love for his boo.

Valerie, who’s been at a girls` school in the area code of Lugazi for the last five years, rants about how Valentine’s is so yesterday and that babes at her school would rather attend mass.

Joe from Mbarara wraps it all up with a rib-cracking tale of how one of his love-notes wound its way into the hands of a teacher at an adjacent girls’ school and was read out to the amusement of the entire assembly.

Which recalls to mind the old adage, once bitten twice shy, none-the-less, he says he and his pals who are lucky enough to possess better-halves still find means to pour out their hearts to them through late night calls on their smuggled k-series gadgets.

Even as there are many differing tales on the notion of St Val`s day, many a teen still woudn’t mind recognising it, esp those who can..  Happy Val`s day y`all.
