Interdicted Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) director of physical planning, George Agaba, was on Wednesday afternoon charged with murder before the Nakawa Magistrate’s court.

He was sent on remand in Luzira Prison and is expected to appear in court on February 8, 2012.

This after Agaba’s bodyguard shot and killed one person during a demolition exercise in Luzira recently.

Agaba and his bodyguard, Santos Komakech, were detained at Jinja Road Police Station over the incident.

One man was killed and a woman sustained injuries in the chaos that ensued when the evictees turned against the KCCA officials in protest. Komakech was seen shooting live bullets in the direction of the locals.

Some residents accused Agaba of having a personal interest in the land they were being evicted from.

Police boss Gen. Kale Kayihura condemned the violence and met with the residents who were affected during the eviction fracas in which one man – one identified as John Onyango – were shot dead.

He clarified that Komakech was not a police officer and that his action should not be blamed on the police.

Kayihura described Komakech as Agaba’s “personal bodyguard” whose actions could not be blamed on his forces [police].
