A total of 570 students graduated at international Institute of Health Science (IIHS) Jinja at the first graduation ceremony.

65% of the graduands were females and 35% males. They graduated in two disciplines which included a certificate in enrolled general nursing and a certificate in comprehensive nursing.

Presiding over the ceremony, state minister for Primary Education, Kamanda Bataringaya, expressed concern over the inadequate personnel in the health sector.

“There is need for more doctors, nurses and midwives to work in the health sector and the solution for this is to educate and train more of them so that they come out of the institutions with quality skills and serve where ever they will be deployed,” said Bataringaya.

He urged the graduands to always be professional in the execution of their service to save lives.

Bataringaya also cautioned Parents against enrolling their children in some private nursing institutions which do not meet the required standards.

“Some Parents have been enrolling their children as nursing assistants in some institutions but this must stop because government banned this course of Nursing Assistants. We no longer need them in health centers and those masquerading and recruiting them are doing it on their own and will be arrested,” said Bataringaya.

He observed the need to train more nurses and doctors and post them in various health centres in order to reduce on the high maternal mortality and infant mortality rates in the country.

IIHS Executive Director, Prof. Wilton Kezala said the institute faced some challenges which include; lack of a school bus to transport students in hard to reach areas, inadequate qualified tutors and lacks government grant to help the students to do a better practical field work where they are deployed.
