The government has launched the construction of boy’s dormitory worth sh593m at Lira School of Comprehensive Nursing in Lira district.

The project aimed at addressing shortage of accommodation in the institution was launched on Friday by the assistant commissioner in the ministry of education and sports, Lameck Omara Apitta.

The school’s principal, Mary Tiko Ogarubo said the school has enrolled 600 students but the available accommodation and teaching staff are inadequate. The school also lacks land for expansion, funding and office space.

Ogarubo said six teaching staff instead of 20 and seven support staff available cannot match the overwhelming number of students.

“Inadequate funds and teaching staff are issues stressing us day and night.

“After three years, they expect the enrollment to shoot to 1000 students and so the government should consider recruiting more tutors,” the principal explained.

Even with the current needs of the school, Ogarubo hailed the government for helping to develop the curriculum for students pursuing a degree in nursing at Constituent College of Gulu University in Lira. The studies for curriculum start this academic year.

The chairperson of the governing council Ben Ogwang Ochoo urged the government to help the institution acquire land for its expansion.

“If the ministry did not come to our rescue, our extension would stop here,” Ogwang said in a function also attended by Lira municipal mayor Moris Odung Omara and the resident district commissioner, Susan Akany.

Omara, who represented State Minister for Housing Sam Engola, commended the school administration for their work, saying it has emerged the best nursing school in the country in terms of academics performance last year.
