WOBULENZI town council authorities in Luweero District are considering switching to solar powered street lights, following last week’s steep increase in power tariffs.

WOBULENZI town council authorities in Luweero District are considering switching to solar powered street lights, following last week’s steep increase in power tariffs.
 
In a project which is still at pilot stage, the town authorities have purchased and installed the first solar powered street light at a cost of shillings 2.3m.
 
The light which has been installed at a proposed market site, was supplied and installed by All in Trade, a Kampala based company.
 
It comprises : a  85 watts   solar panel, supplied at  shillings 725,000 ,a 36 watts LED solar light  which cost  shillings 485,0000 and a maintenance free battery  worth 625,000 and a charge controller worth   shillings 115,000.
 
The Town clerk Joseph Sebudde said on Tuesday that the council opted for a solar powered street light after finding it cheaper to maintain than that connected to the national grid.
 
The Electricity Regulatory Authority, last Week announced a steep increases in power tariffs after the government withdrew subsidies which it was paying to power producers in the country.
