A bill to amend the Bugisu Coffee Ordinance was discussed by the Council of Ministers of the Central Government.
On the same day the agriculture minister, Balamu Mukasa, met a 27-man delegation from the Bugisu Coffee Marketing Association.

The delegation also met chief minister Bendicto Kiwanuka about the association’s grievances over the Bugisu Coffee Ordinance.

The association secretary, Y.N. Mudebo, said members of his association had not sold their coffee for the last six months due to the Government’s delay in granting an exporting licence. They sought an amendment to the Bugisu Coffee Ordinance, which would enable them to export their coffee without selling it through the Bugisu Co-operative Union.

He said their members were facing a serious financial crisis, as they would not be able to send their children back to school until the coffee had been sold.

The Independence Monument was made from cement, sand, iron bars and wire mesh.

It is the work of Gregory Maloba, a Luhya sculptor from Kenya, who studied and taught art at Makerere University from 1939-1965. He executed this work in the months before October 9, 1962- the day of independence.
