National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters in Luweero district have petitioned President Yoweri Museveni to ‘save’ general duties minister Kiddu Makubuya who is facing censure over last year’s controversial compensation to businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba.

In a petition to the President which they handed to the RDC, Paul Lubowa on Tuesday, the party members said part of the blame should go to those who effected the payment.

They also asked the President to prevail over Basajjabalaba to refund the money which he was wrongly paid.

The petition which was signed by 500 NRM supporters, mostly from Kiddu Makubuya’s Katikamu South constituency, was presented to the RDC in presence of the Buganda NRM Chairman, who is also district party Chairman, Abdul Nadduli and Luweero district party officials.

Kiddu Makubuya together with former Finance Minister Syda Bumba are accused of awarding Basajjabalaba more than 160 billion in compensation for his alleged loss of business after the government cancelled his tenders to manage city markets.

The petitioners led by the Katikamu sub-county Chairman, Sam Serunjogi said the accusation was a ploy by detractors to dent Kiddu Makubuya’ s clean record of long  and diligent service to the NRM government.

“It is funny that some politicians are forcing Kiddu Makubuya to refund the money which he never ate, when they know the real culprit .This is an indication that there are ill motives behind,” they said.

They said Kiddu Makubuya had helped to strengthen the NRM in Luweero district through mobilizing the people and funding party activities, in addition to serving the nation in various capacities.

Kiddu Makubuya, who is serving his fourth term as Katikamu South MP, has successively served as: LC1 secretary, LC3 Secretary, LC5 Secretary, member of the constituent assembly, Member of Parliament and Minister.

As a Minister he has served in the Ministries of Luwerero Triangle, Education, and Justice, before being appointed Minister for General duties in the Prime Minister’s office.

‘The good things that Kiddu Makubuya has done for the nation should not be overshadowed by the confusion which he did not initiate.

“If Kiddu erred in sanctioning the compensation, then Bsajjabalaba should refund the money,” they said.
