Members of Parliament are to investigate the death of an Asian businessman Mohinder Singh Chal, one of the directors of Amman Industrial Tools and Equipment (Aitel) Ltd, the company at the center of the botched $1.7m (sh4.7b) LC bicycle deal.

“His death was so mysterious. It is suspected that mafias behind the botched bicycle deal could have caused it,” an opposition MP, Abdul Katuntu (Bugweri) told reporters on Thursday at Parliament.

Mohinder was found dead in his house number 17 situated on Block L Bukoto Brown flats a Kampala suburb on Sunday morning, Police said.

Katuntu added, “We ask government to institute an inquiry into the businessman’s death. This is man who had all the information about who swindled the bicycle project money.”

He said if, government ignores MPs’ call to investigate the death, MPs will institute a probe into the matter.

In November 2010, the local government ministry signed an agreement with Aitel to supply 70,000 bicycles for local councils. However, soon after the receiving the sh4.7b, the company directors vanished.
