EMBATTLED Makerere University chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera will preside over next week’s graduation ceremony despite continuous demands for his resignation.

University spokesperson Gilbert Kadilo said Kagonyera would continue to perform all the official duties of a chancellor until his term ends or the university council pronounces itself on his fate.

“He (Kagonyera) is still the chancellor. Expect none other than him to preside over the graduation,” Kadilo said yesterday.

Meanwhile, President Yoweri Museveni is among the 13,177 graduands Kagonyera will award degrees during the university’s 60th graduation ceremony.

Museveni will receive an honourary doctorate in law in recognition of his support to the education sector, science and technology, industrialisation and women empowerment. The ceremony will last five days. A total of 220 students got first-class degrees.

Kagonyera became the chancellor of Makerere University in December 2007.
He is remaining with two years to the end of his four-year term.
However, various university stakeholders want Kagonyera to resign over the Auditor General’s report that implicated him in abuse of office at the National Social Security Fund where he was the deputy managing director.

“We don’t want a chancellor whose image cannot give mileage to the university,” Thomas Tayebwa, the chairperson of the university convocation, said recently.

Vice-chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba also told reporters early this month that it would be sad if the university council had to discuss Kagonyera’s fate.

Baryamureeba urged Kagonyera to make a statement on the matter. But Kagonyera has rejected calls for resignation.
