MAKERERE University and the Ministry of Health have established a project to track health conditions in the country, the university vice chancellor has said.

MAKERERE University and the Ministry of Health have established a project to track health conditions in the country, the university vice chancellor has said.

Under the project, health officials from rural communities will use communication technologies to receive information on diseases and other health challenges. The information will be accessed through an online network linking health centres at district, regional and national level.

Addressing graduands on the 60th graduation at Makerere University on Friday, vice chancellor Prof Venancius Baryamureeba said the university had designed a similar project for Rwanda to track malaria prevalence.
He said the initiative will help provide farmers with information through district and national coordination centres.

Speaking to journalists state minister for health Dr. Richard Nduhuura said the initiative will help service providers handle critical health issues.
He said health officials in remote areas will use the facility to consult specialists in national hospitals.

Baryamureeba also revealed that the university, the agriculture ministry and Uganda Communications Commission agreed to provide agricultural extension services to communities using information and communication technologies.

Currently, the university and the education ministry are implementing an education management system in Mbale and Kiboga to track pupil-and eacher attendance Baryamureeba said.
The information will be sent to district education officers through mobile phone text messages.
